The Positively True Story of StraightForward Media
(WARNING: This is a little longer, and much more interesting, than the usual "About Us" pablum you read on other websites. Don't say we didn't warn you. If you want the short version, click here.)

In 2001, Josh Barsch founded StraightForward Media in Phoenix, Arizona. And just in the nick of time, because he was about to get fired from his job at a software company for arguing with C-level executives way more than a product manager should. On the heels of the dot-com crash and only months before September 11th, it was, in retrospect, a terrible time to start a business. Especially with no money, no business plan, and no prospects.

Undeterred (well, maybe just a little deterred) but certainly not ready to go get a real job, Barsch dove into the fledging pay-per-click advertising industry, in which GoTo.com was the only significant player. Recognizing early on that paid search was the future of online advertising, he re-focused StraightForward Media as an exclusively PPC-management agency. Fortunately, because the industry was so young and below the radar, becoming an expert and an industry leader was a quick process.

Unfortunately, however, the world wasn't quite ready to pour money into paid search just yet, so StraightForward Media struggled early on. Convincing the world to dive into PPC wasn't easy: Barsch ran up credit card bills that would send Suze Orman into seizures. He delivered Auto Traders in the middle of the night and sold his plasma twice a week to make ends meet at home, so he could keep pumping money into the business. He even volunteered to be a medical research subject (they denied him -- too pudgy, apparently).

Eventually, though, the world came around, and the rest is history. Google now earns over $1 billion per month from the click charges it collects, and over 500,000 advertisers worldwide are taking advantage of PPC advertising to rack up new customers on the cheap. StraightForward Media creates and manages pay-per-click advertising campaigns for over 500 of those companies worldwide. And none of our employees are selling their bodily fluids to pay the rent, either, which is nice.
