A portion of Alejandro's winning essay:
Business was a field I was exposed at a young age. Both of my parents did not graduate from high school due to economical issues and were force to work at an adolescent age. When my father migrated to the United States, he immediately began working at a clothing manufacturing factory making only enough to support my mother and me at the time. With no high school or college degree, my father knew there were not many opportunities for positions with higher wages. Therefore, he decided to become self-employed by starting his own business. My father decided to manufacture his own women’s clothing and sell the merchandise at swap meets. His business started slow since he was new to the market of women’s clothing and to the location where he was conducting business. Eventually he began making more money than his previous employment. At that point, around the age of five years old, I began to learn and observe how my father began his own business and how he managed to stay in business until this day. During my adolescent years of elementary school, I began seeing things in a business sense. In first grade I was thinking of earning my weekly allowance to have big savings in the future instead of purchasing the latest Mattel action figures. In addition, during middle school and high school, I shopped for bargains to obtain the same type of clothing my friends had at a lower price to have spare money in my savings account. In my senior of high school, all senior year students were assigned to complete a project on a career they planned to pursue after graduation. When I was notified of the mandatory assignment, I already knew the field of study I was planning to pursue in college. I selected Business Management since I was planning to learn the fundamentals of management and attain my bachelor’s to eventually become an Entrepreneur and open my own business. When I began my collegiate career at Long Beach State University, I was admitted as a pre-Business student. My whole life I had learned at a young age how challenging and difficult the business world is with instability and turmoil constantly occurring in companies and corporations. At this point I had a broader sense of business and on the subfields of Management, Finance, Marketing, and others as I was progressing in my classes. The main reason I chose to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Business Management was to influence the market and create my own product or service to contribute to society or certain consumers. Of course, working for a corporation or owning a successful business can be highly rewarding in terms of money, which was had always been an issue of importance. However, it was the not the money that drove me, but rather the field of management. Interacting with subordinates and being responsible for important decisions in a company or organization as well as motivating people to excel beyond their limits has been my ideal career. As a leader I know I can influence others to do some good for themselves and their community. Currently in my senior year of college and approaching graduation in a year and a half, I know that Business has been the correct field of study for me. The path in reaching a top management position at a Fortune 500 company will be a long and difficult goal. However, I feel it is the only way I can contribute to my community and the world. People are always losing jobs due to outsourcing by many US companies expanding internationally where labor is cheaper in foreign countries. With downfall of the market after the September 11 attack, many businesses went bankrupt and employees were laid off causing financial instability for many families. As a future manager I plan to make decisions that will benefit the people and society. For example, I will ensure the stability of jobs for the people working in companies and operate in the most efficient manner that will benefit everyone as well as the natural environment. Many corporations worldwide exploit workers in under developed countries where workers barely make enough income to survive. In a world where profits are the main force of a business, companies operate in methods that damage or affect the natural environment. Many manufacturing plants dispose certain toxics and chemicals in the air, land, or ocean severely harming he nature of the environment. Now more than ever companies are responding to the demands of environmental sustainability because for centuries organizations have ignored the idea of conserving the natural environment. The people at fault are top management personnel that choose not to encourage their organizations to operate in the most efficient and effective methods of the society. Companies have been meeting certain environmental demands to satisfy customers.
