StraightForward Media is proud to announce that the winner
of our latest Law School Scholarship is Rusty Duncan. |
|
"I am from Greenville, SC and a current second year student at Campbell University School of Law in Buies Creek, NC. I obtained an undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice from the University of South Carolina. Before starting law school I obtained a Paralegal degree at Greenville Technical College and worked as a paralegal for a short time.
I hope to use my law degree to help others. I have a great interest in family law and employment law and have found from my school and work experiences that people really need the help of an attorney when family and employment law issues arise. I feel I can use the my personal experience as well as my professional expertise to bring an unique point of view to any legal situation and in turn help people deal with their legal problems as well as the personal issues that arise from taking or defending legal action."

| A former paraprofessional psychiatric social worker, I used to work with the homeless population as well as case manage adults with chronic psychiatric symptoms and substance abuse issues. Currently, however, I am a third-year law student at the University at Buffalo, as well as a third-year Ph.D. student in Philosophy, with a special interest in continental philosophy. At the moment, I am working on a two-paper project for my Master's Degree in Philosophy, on the Realist misinterpretation of Hobbes and the notions of death and technology in Heidegger's thought. My interests in law center around international legal issues, particularly human rights law, public international law, and property rights and economic development, although I also have an interest in environmental justice issues. Consequently, I have worked as a clerk on the Buffalo Environmental Law Journal for the last three years.
In my spare time, I love to travel and try to make use of my language skills: I am conversational in both French and Spanish, read German and have a rudimentary understanding of Japanese. I love the outdoors, particularly camping, hiking, and motorcycling, as well as reading, art, film and music, and have been a free-lance artist for many years, having designed business logos, contributed illustrations to two books (one forthcoming), fanzines, and even painted a mural at a visitors' center to a maximum security prison. Ultimately, I would like both to practice law, as well as make scholarly contributions to the field. It is my hope that my diverse interests and experiences will make me a both a better lawyer and a better legal scholar. The StraightForward Media Law School Scholarship has enabled me to take yet another step in realizing my dream.

| "A Man for Others," my prep school
motto, is a philosophy of life that taps into the best in all
of us in that we contribute our talents and abilities to enrich
one another's lives professionally, intellectually, and socially.
This mind set has given impetus to my pursuit of a degree in law
where the perseverance, drive, and determination that have sustained
me thus far in life will find a new opportunity for growth and
development.

Quarter, 2005
StraightForward Media is proud to announce that the winner of our
3rd Quarter, 2005, Law School Scholarship is Theresa Watts.
"I grew up with angry parents, angry neighbors and generally angry folks all
around me. Their anger, and eventually my own, had nothing to do with
them being good people. They were all good people. They were angry
because they were frustrated, and because they suffered. They were
angry because they worked hard, but did not enjoy the same freedom
as others."
