A portion of Nick's winning essay:
I chose to attend a business school because the entrepreneur aspect of business intrigues and excites me. As long as I can remember I have been fascinated with building a project from scratch and seeing it either succeed or fall flat. I have always had dreams of starting my own business from nothing and seeing where I could take it. I have big ambitions of what I want to do, and now I'm working for the means to get them done. My goal in life is to open my very own music venue. I have already transformed my first internship at Summerfest, the worlds largest music festival, into a full-time summer job. I have been able to network and develop some great contacts that will undoubtedly prove valuable in the long run.
My love of music has been with me since birth, but it wasn't until I spent time working with my mom that I realized that even though I wasn't going to be a rock star, I could still stay active in music. My mom is, as far as I'm concerned, a business genius. In the past five years I have seen her start her own business building boutique hotels across the Midwest. She is just now on the verge of really making it, and it's really starting to get exciting, especially after all she has sacrificed to help get the company off the ground. After spending time seeing what she does for a living I realized that this would be my calling, too. Not necessarily the hotels but starting a business from scratch and taking those ideas from the drawing board and turning them into something that you can really be proud of.
After leaving high school I had a number of options of what I could do with my life. Different majors, schools -- even the military was something that I considered very closely. However, in the end it was clear to me that I would really be happy if I was working on projects that meant a lot to me. Seeing something take shape after putting so much time and energy into it is what makes the whole thing worth while in the end. I've seen both my mom and my late father have success in business, and I hope to carry on the family tradition.
As far as what I can contribute to the business aspect of the world, I feel that I will be able to bring a unique, creative aspect to the small business community. I have huge aspirations of what I want to do. I have the vision and the drive to see it get done, and now I'm networking my way through the business community trying to learn as much as possible and to meet as many people as I can. Even though I am only a sophomore in college I am already very excited to graduate to see if all these ideas I have floating in my head are feasible ventures.
